Life and Whatnot

MUSICAL MONDAYS

What’s your favorite song? If you’re a writer, does it inspire your creativity? Cure writer’s block? If you’re not a writer, what do your favorite songs do for you?

My husband often laughs at me and says, “How can you still be listening to that song? Aren’t you sick of it yet?” Songs have a huge impact on me whether I’m writing or not. I’ve been known to click repeat on a song while I’m driving and listen to the same one several times until I reach my destination.

Strange? Well, some would think so. I’ve been called much worse names…But seriously, music inspires me, calms me, energizes me and the list could go on. For example, today, I chose “We” by Joy Williams. What a simple title, right?

Oh, but the subject isn’t so simple. It hits to the core of something many people struggle with. “Who are WE and will people really like us once they know the real us?”

So, give it a listen and tell me what you think. And let me know what’s one of your favorite songs so I can go and listen to it as well:-)

Hey there! I know exactly how that is! I’ll listen to the same song/cd over and over and over and over and… well, you get the picture. I have one cd that I listened to during almost the entire writing of my book, so when I hear those songs, I automatically associate them with scenes in my book. There is this cd I have by a volinist named Vanessa Mae. I was listening to it when I was reading Dracula for the first time, and now, even though it’s just gorgeous classical and contemporary violin music, every time I hear it I get goosebumps and have this feeling of dread. There are other cds that put me back to a certain place in my history, like high school or college, and when I hear them I have the same sense of internal angst or whatever that I was experiencing when I was addicted to that particular song or cd.

Great point, Kat. I never even thought about what my MC’s favorite song would be. MMMMMM, tune in next Monday and I’ll see if by then I can figure out what her fav song would be.

Last winter, I found a CD in my possession that really helped me connect with the thoughts, feelings of my MC. After re-reading the musician’s bio, I understood why. Many of the personal battles she sings about on that CD are battles I had my MC facing.

Needless to say, it’s still one of my favorite cds.

    Happy Monday!
