Now…onto the movie.

A 14th century Crusader returns to a homeland devastated by the Black Plague. A beleaguered church, deeming sorcery the culprit of the plague, commands the two knights to transport an accused witch to a remote abbey, where monks will perform a ritual in hopes of ending the pestilence. A priest, a grieving knight, a disgraced itinerant and a headstrong youth who can only dream of becoming a knight join a mission troubled by mythically hostile wilderness and fierce contention over the fate of the girl. When the embattled party arrives at the abbey, a horrific discovery jeopardises the knight’s pledge to ensure the girl fair treatment, and pits them against an inexplicably powerful and destructive force.
My review
This movie surprised me. Not in the holy-cow-this-was-fantastic way…but still surprised me. It started out pretty slow and I was like, Oh, I totally know where this is going. But then, half way through I started doubting my original ideas. Little tidbits contradicting my theories sprinkled through the cliche plot….
Surprising.
Oh, but there was NO saving the characters. Either you have an accent or you don’t…it’s not the: sometimes I talk like a European and sometimes I don’t.
Doesn’t work that way.
Why didn’t they get some actors who have natural accents? I just don’t understand that. Anyway. . . the movie redeemed itself near the last 1/4 and the ending tugged at my heart a little bit.
By far, Ron Perlman, surprised me the most. I mean Hellboy? Come on. But he had one particular comment/action in the movie that really won me over. I can’t tell you that moment or I might give away too much.
So….my rating is:

Have you seen it? What’d you think?

My friend, Natasha Mostert, wrote a really amazing book called Season of the Witch and the movie is in development. Sadly because of this movie, hers will probably change the title… Oh well!
BTW it’s a great paranormal suspense novel… Worth reading!
Lisa 🙂

Wow, that’s so cool…not the changing the title thing, but that it’s a book and movie in development. Might have to check out the book.
KM Wilsher
LOL. We both gave it two tickets 🙂 Sorry mine posted late, darn that google blogger!
Fun review, girl and, as always, fun to head out to the movies with ya!
Lynn Rush
That’s okay, KM. I had a blast hanging with you, too. Great minds think alike with the two tickets thing. 🙂
Savannah Chase
Thank you for the review…I was planning on going to see it….Now I will just wait…
Lynn Rush
Yep. Saved you a few bucks Move theatre tickets vs red box…..no competition there.
Jillian Chantal
Thanks for the advice. I’m not a Nic Cage fan anyway and I think I’ll give this one a pass. Appreciate you being the guinea pig on this one!
Lynn Rush
Probably a good choice.
Yeah, the things I suffer to help …. I love movies…even when I get a dud once in a while. I live a tough life watching movies for review. 🙂 Glad to help you out on this one, though. 🙂

Movies like this terrify me. I can’t even watch the commercials for them. If I’m watching live TV, I actually pause it, so it can get ahead, and then fast forward through them.
Lynn Rush
Really? What about them don’t you like?
Caridad Pineiro
Thanks for the review. I was having a hard time buying Nicolas Cage in something historical, even though I really like him generally. Will definitely put it on the Redbox list.
Lynn Rush
Yep. He was tough to buy in historical for sure. 🙂 I like him, too. Loved him in Faceoff. Gone in 60 Seconds was good, too:)

Didn’t see it, didn’t really have interest in it – but I like Ron Perlman. I own Hellboy. There’s some interesting analogies buried in there. Anyway, Cinema Sound Off is always fun! Have a great day!
Lynn Rush
Perlman’s good in Hellboy. I own that movie, too. It’s good. But something like this….not so much. LOL! Thanks!
Ciara Knight
Accents in movies are a big issue for me. I’ll turn a movie off when actors start dropping their accents. Thanks for the review. I won’t be seeing this one. 🙂
Lynn Rush
Yeah, you should probably pass, then. 🙂

I’ve seen the previews for it and had to wonder why they’d cast Nicholas Cage as a crusader. I’m a history fanatic and if I see anachronisms or hear horrible accents, I’m turned off completely. I don’t think I’ll be seeing this movie though. It doesn’t look interesting to me at all. Which makes me sad cause I do love Nicholas Cage.
Lynn Rush
I know. They totally chose wrong. The only thing good about Nicholas in this role was that he was a knight. Stoic, detached from emotion….and since he can’t act very dramatically it suited him in that aspect. But nothing else. Especially the accent. Oh my word. . . . LOL
Rachel Firasek
Thanks for the warning. I haven’t even seen the previews for this, but then again I hardly watch tv anymore.
Lynn Rush
I saw it advertise at another movie I saw and the witch part interested me. But — eh — it was okay…. LOL
Laura Diamond
Hmmm, interesting review. Hadn’t planned on seeing this movie, either in the theater or on DVD, lol!
Lynn Rush
LOL. I’m not sure I would have watched it on my own if it hadn’t been for Cinema Sound Off…..The witch part intrigued me. But yeah, if you’re bored and all the other movies are “rented” grab it…you might be surprised. LOL
