Life and Whatnot

Firefly

This past Thanksgiving Day, I got to lounge around and watch TV. I’d heard a lot about this Firefly show from some of my fellow writers. So, I downloaded all the TV episodes from Netflix and thought I’d give it a shot.

Ever see that show? I guess it was on for only one season or something. Got cancelled.

In a way, I can see why. I almost shut the computer down after the first couple episodes. Didn’t grab my attention very well. But, after a little break I figured I’d give it another shot. By episode four, I was hooked.

Pretty snappy writing. But then again, I’m not surprised. I love Joss Wheadon‘s humor and wit. I mean, he did create Buffy, Dollhouse, and Angel—some of my fav shows. This guy knows how to develop some freaking awesome ideas, that’s for sure.

Anyway, back to the show. I stayed up entirely too late watching, and then the next day, I watched the movie, Serenity, after it. Wow.

I think it was the characters that drew me to it, because some of the episodes were pretty predictable and a bit “overdone” when it came to some of their adventures. But, as it does in reading books, characters draw me in. If I love the character(s) then I’ll read a book all the way through despite any writing issues that may jump out at me.

One character I wanted to strangle was River. Jeez, she was so whiny. Sure, she kicked some serious butt later on in the movie, but until then…UGH, I nearly wanted to scratch my eyes out during her scenes.

If you watched the show, who was your favorite character?

My favourite character is Jayne. He’s very WYSIWYG, but there are little flashes of both tenderness and humour.

  • Rosslyn Elliott

Hey – it’s interesting that you mention Joss Whedon. My friends just showed me a short of his called “Dr. Horrible.” It was OK, but nothing to write home about. I should probably watch some of his better known work like Buffy to get a better feel for what he can do.

Yeah, I have the series on DVD as well. I love most of Joss’ shows. In Firefly, it’s def the characters that make the show–which is probably part of the reason it was canceled. Sometimes characters just aren’t enough. 🙁 Was for me… lol

Ralene–characters are often enough for me too, even through bad writing or plots…Firefly/Serenity were a bit predictable…but the characters held my interest more than anything. LOL!

Favorite chracter? Mal Reynolds. Without question. A good guy doing kind of bad things while still doing good things. A rebel with a heart. And yeah, I have the series on DVD, I admit it. 🙂

I didn’t watch this show, but I have watched Serenity. I love Joss’s work too–he’s got a great wit. I thought the movie was sort of predicatble as well, but I agree with you, I liked the characters and that helped me stick with it.

    Nice post!

Mal Reynolds really made the show for me. The man’s got a history he doesn’t much want to talk about, interacts with everyone on the ship, has a funny side, a serious side, character was just perfect for me. and Nathan Fillion was perfect in the role.

Kaylee rocked my world, and I wish Wash had a bigger role, I adore him.

Yes, River got annoying sometimes, and the first episode didn’t do much for me. But who can say no to captain tightpants?

btw, if you want more Serenity/Firefly, there’s a handful of comic books floating around.

Yeah, Mal was a unique character. At first I didn’t like him. Too harsh. But then, once I saw his humor and he softened a bit…I was hooked. My fave was Kaylee, too. Her facial expressions and sweet demeanor was awesome!

My best friend told me I had to watch this show, but I never did. Now, I did see the movie…um, Serenity? I can’t remember, and that was pretty cool. I suppose one day I’ll have to sit down and watch Firefly just to appease my BFF (cause she gets cranky!)

Yep, Serenity. That was the name of the ship…which I LOVE by the way! That’s such a fun word! Yep. You might wanna check it out. It’s a fun series. And you want to keep the BFF calm. 🙂

OMW- This is one of my all time favorite shows. I was devistated when they canceled it. Then they teased me with the movie. Promises of a sequel ticked me off. I loved all the characters. I think this is one of those shows you love or hate. I LOVED it. Of course, having Nathan Fillian in it made me like it even more. 🙂 I have the series on DVD. Yep, that’s right. I’m not ashame to tell ya either. 🙂

All time favorites, huh? Why did they cancel it, anyway? Only one season, right? Kind of unexpected if ‘hear’ correctly. The movie, Serenity was pretty good. 🙂
