FRIDAY FUNNIES

Friday Funnies is a chance to share your wild and crazy stories. Whether it’s a personal story or just something that strikes you as funny. Let’s laugh and have some fun, but keep it clean, cuz I’m a watchin’ **wink wink**

I grew up in Minnesota…and yes, it’s pronounced MinEEEsOta **smile** Hey, what can I say, I was born in Fargo, ND, OK? And YES, the accent IS that thick. For real.

Sorry, I digress.

The funny story I have for today is kinda silly, from when I grew up. As I mentioned before, I grew up in Minnesota. And we all know it can snow a ton in Minnesota and it gets really cold, right? (Hence my move to Arizona….) As kids, we would go and play outside no matter what the weather.

Well, when I was in sixth grade, me and my friend, Shannon Howell, were in my neighbor’s back yard climbing a tree.

I was about twelve feet up while Shannon stood on the ground watching. As I’m doing my best immitation of a monkey, I reached up toward the branch above me to pull myself up. As I stepped on the branch to lift me high enough to grab the branch, it snapped.

I plummeted to the ground.

You might be thinking, “What’s so funny about that?”

Yeah, well, it was the dead of winter and I was in a full snow suit. Yeah, remember those? The movie, “A Christmas Story” comes to mind when I picture that snow suit I was wearing.

I meah, can we say, “DAHHHHH?” Dry, brittle branches? Thick, encumbering winter gear? Yeah, not a good mix.

I fell and landed smack on my back. The wind whooshed out of my lungs and I hadn’t ever experienced that before. I remember Shannon leaning over me asking me if I was all right. I reached for her thick jacket and pulled her close asking, “Am I dead?”

Mom jetted me to the emergency room (one of my many trips there for various broken bones, injuries….) They took an x-ray and said the ribs on my left side were broken.

For some reason, they took a second x-ray and determined they weren’t broken, it was just something on the x-ray before (like a piece of hair or something?–I don’t remember.)

In the mean time, my little boyfriend (yeah, the whole can -I-hold-your-hand-type boyfriend) called my house and my lovely sister told him, “Oh, yeah, she fell out of a tree and is in the hospital.”

I ended up with bruised ribs and got out of PE for a week or so.

I look back and chuckle at some of the stupid things I did and laugh. Frequently.

What’s a funny thing you did while growin’ up that you look back and laugh at?

HI Belinda….thanks for stopping by, glad you did. Yeah, the memories are great. But my memory of my last fall is just over 1.5 years ago…how sad is that… **smile**

I remember climbing in my grandmothers cherry tree to pick the cherries and eat them. I used to get sick from eating so many. But I loved it!!!

I also got stung by some wasps while in a tree once. That wasn’t so much fun.
Thanks for sharing your story…and everyone else. Brings back memories, huh?

OMG Sarah. Locked in the car door. JEEPERS CREEPERS, girl. Can we say “OUCH?”

Avily, To the bone? 23 inches. Holy crap. Yeah, I so wanna see that scar, I bet it’s a beauty.

As a child, I spent every other weekend in the ER because I was always getting injured. Luckily, it was never anything life threatening.

My favorite injury was the time I locked my thumb in the car door. I was seven, and my dad had already gone inside. I was standing in our driveway with my thumb in the door, screaming at the top of my lungs. It took about five minutes for my dad to realize I was still outside, and then figure out that HE had to unlock the door to set me free.

I broke the tip of the bone in my thumb, but I laugh about it now. I mean come on, who locks their thumb in the car while it’s still attached? (That’s not to say people do it all the time while it’s detached. Heh.)

    That’s awesome!
I’ve climbed many a tree in my younger years. That’s the one thing I do miss by living in Phoenix- my kids have less of a chance to do some of that stuff.

I don’t miss not having a white Christmas. I really love not being freezing. We lived in Iowa for a short time while my hubby was in school, and I remember at one point it was like the end of March (end of March in Phoenix we’re getting ready to start going swimming, mind you!) and, with the wind chill factor, it was like 28 degrees below zero!!!

I was not at all sad to leave that behind!

My falling story is not from a tree- it was just from being stupid. We had one of those giant trampolines, and we decided it would be fun to jump off the roof onto the trampoline.

Well, it was fun- HUGELY fun- until I bounced too high and bounced off the trampoline and hit one of the springs with my leg. Sliced my leg open down to the bone. I think I got like 23 or 27 stitches or something ridiculous.

Sometime I’ll show you the scar.

Heck NO. I don’t miss a white Christmas. I’d rather be in my shorts and T-shrt any day. **LOL** TWENTY degrees. Oh my goodness. Oh my goodness. I went to MN for Christmas like five years ago and was soooo cold it was miserable. I have thin skin now. **smile**

My falling story isn’t so funny. It happened 20 years ago this week. Hey, you just gave me a blog idea for the day.

I love “A Christmas Story,” and that’s exactly what I pictured when you said winter in MinnEESOta. Glad you weren’t mussed up too bad from the incident.

The Arizona sun must be nice. We had a high of about 20 here in Nebraska on Tuesday. But don’t you miss white Christmases?

I loved to climb trees when I was a kid (and still do). Our front yard had a big maple tree, and one day I decided I would climb to the top. As a just-in-case thing, I decided to put something on the ground to catch me if I fell. Since it was summer and I was hot anyway, I thought my shirt would do fine. (You see where this is going, don’t you?)

I fell. And the shirt did catch me. But that did little to keep my right arm from breaking…
