FRIENDS

The dictionary defines a friend as: A person whom one knows and with whom one has a bond of mutual affection, typically exclusive of romantic or family relations.

I’ve been spending quite a bit of time on FaceBook. It started as a marketing idea for my writing. But it’s turned into so much more.

I’ve meet some fantastic people, writers and non-writers alike. And, over this past weekend, I connected with some long lost high school friends. It’s been a blast from the past to be quite honest with you.

Ever have that?

Immediately I was whisked back to the big feathered hair, rolled up jeans, and Forenza clothes. I’ll have to remember that for my “Then and Now Thursday” post, huh?

Oh, I digress…

I didn’t have the most spectacular high school experience. No need for details other than the fact that I was a lost and angry teenager. Pretty hard to tolerate. I ran from high school to college, met my future husband then started my life leaving everything and most everyone behind.

But then, the power of FaceBook flexed its muscles and brought me in contact with many friends and not just from high school. It got me thinking about friends in general and Ecclesiates 4:10 sums it up nicely in my mind: “If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!”

How do you define friend?

I think a true friend is someone with whom you can share ‘secrets’ and receive ‘secrets’ in trust. I have quite a few acquaintances, but fewer true friends. If they’re the right people, though, a few is enough. 🙂

Jesus is my best Friend, of course, followed by my hubby and sister. Gotta have those women-friends too, though.

    Great post!

Great stuff, thanks for sharing everyone! I think I’ll try Facebook. I’d love to connect with some old friends. There are some that I carry in my heart everyday! Maybe on Facebook. Sounds like a busy and wonderful weekend Lrush!

A friend is someone you can disagree with but still enjoy.

I think I’ve told you about my Roommates- there are nine of us, plus honoraries that have been friends since college. We don’t always agree, and goodness knows we’ve had our spats and falling-outs, but we’ve always managed to repair and maintain our friendships.

And, in a crisis, there isn’t one of us who wouldn’t be avaliable to another. We’ve had our share of crises, of course, and we pull together and help each other through.

I’ve thought about Facebook too, and for the same reasons. As for friends, I think a friend is someone you can call at three in the morning and not worry if he or she will answer.

In recent months, I’ve experienced the same reconnection with former friends and the pleasure of making new writer-friends. Though I sometimes miss our less-technological society from the 70s and 80s, I’m glad for this opportunity to meet like-minded friends. The writing life can be lonely, and internet community really helps!
