Change the chatter.

******

There is a lot of chatter floating around in our minds at any given time. Sometimes it feels constant. Like the thoughts never quiet down.

And if that chatter is negative-watch out.

Knocking yourself down with negative thoughts can really break your spirit. Sap your energy.

“I can’t do anything right.”

“Why couldn’t I resist that cookie?”

“I’m weak.”

“I’m stupid.”

“I’ll never amount to anything.”

“I hate my job.”

“I feel fat.”

Any of those, or similar thoughts, run through your mind?

You’re not alone.

The challenge, though, is to change the chatter. It won’t go away 100%, but we can fight it, try and turn them around.

When I’m being a Negative Nelly, my thoughts spiraling down, I have to literally stop and work at focusing on positives of the day. Sometimes I have to sit and write them down to really stay focused.

Or, I reach out to a close friends to let them know I’m struggling. They can truly shed light on my dark thoughts.

Another thing I do is listen to some music that inspires me. One song that is a go to for me: For Those Who Wait, by Fireflight.

One other thing that’s super helpful is that I find someone to help. Volunteering time to a cause or person you believe in helps get the focus off yourself.

And let’s face it when we’re stuck in our negative chatter we’re really hyper-focusing on ourselves. If we shift our line of sight to someone else who needs help, we feel better. And that leads to more positive self chatter.

So how’s your self chatter sounding lately? What do you do to shift it from negative to not so negative?
