Throwback Thursday

Hey, do you remember the original We Are The World from 1985?

It was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie and was released March 7, 1985 for Africa.

I thought, back then, that it was a fantastic thing. All these stars using their popularity for the good of others.

And now we have one for Haiti:

Sure, it’s a bit different, but I’m still really glad to see people coming together to help those who need it.

What’d you think of the remake?

I heard that some of the artists that were in both said the biggest difference between the two recording sessions was that in the ’80’s no one really had a cell phone, and that this recent one, not only did everyone have one they were all texting constantly LOL Fun song.

At the time the original came out, I can remember thinking that the American musicians were simply following the Brits who, at Bob Geldoff’s influence, did “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” for hunger relief in Ethiopia. (Still one of my holiday faves.)

I wasn’t much of a fan, but now I hear the original and it takes me back, makes me smile. (Thanks for posting.) As for the Haiti upgrade, it doesn’t really move me. But that’s just my opinion.

Wow, I hadn’t thought about this song in forever, but I remember listening to it on vinyl and singing my heart out (badly). I like the idea behind a new one, but it just isn’t the same for me. The original will always be the best in my eyes.
